gallium nitride powder (GaN) is an important raw material for blue, white and ultraviolet LEDs. In order to improve the luminescence performance of these devices, researchers have investigated various methods to increase the amount of light emitted by GaN crystals. One of the most promising ways is to reduce the size of the crystals. This article reports on the successful development of a method to synthesize ultrafine GaN powders with improved luminescent properties.

The improvement was accomplished by sonicating the GaN powder in methanol for half an hour. The sonicated samples were examined by transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction to confirm the existence of wurtzite-structured GaN particles with a size range between 20-200 nm. An elemental analysis using energy dispersive spectroscopy showed that the improved GaN powder contains only nitrogen and gallium, with no oxygen present within the detection limit of the instrument.

The gallium nitride powder is manufactured by American Elements, which offers standard grades such as Mil Spec; ACS, Reagent and Technical Grade; Food, Agricultural and Pharmaceutical Grade; and USP and EP/BP (European Pharmacopoeia/British Pharmacopoeia) grades. In addition to the standard grades, gallium nitride is also available in submicron and nanopowder forms. Typical packaging is a 1kg bag or a 25 kg barrel, and the company can provide custom packaging upon request. The gallium nitride is shipped as soon as payment receipt is confirmed.
