What is A316L stainless Steel? Also known as marine grade stainless, 316L is the most popular austenitic steel. After iron, the major alloy components are chromium (16-18%) and nickel (10-12%). There is also molybdenum (2-4%) and small amounts of silicon, sulfur, and phosphorus ( 1%).

Common uses for 316L include the chemical, petrochemical, and food processing industries.

316L vs. 316L
Both the 316L as well as 316L stainless-steel alloys can be used for marine applications. The only difference is the lower carbon percentage in 316L. Carbon content cannot exceed 0.03% in order to comply with 316L requirements. This lowers the chance of carbon deposition making it a more suitable choice for welding.

316 stainless Steel contains a moderate carbon content with a low molybdenum level of between 2 and 3. This improves its resistance to acidic elements, corrosion, and high temperatures.
These materials are very flexible, so they excel in stretching and bending.

Do I need 316L or 318L stainless steel for this project?
Consider the following:
Corrosion resistance
The best choice in high temperature and high corrosion applications is 316L. 316L’s carbon content is lower than 316. This gives it a better resistance to corrosion and will resist rusting like 316 stainless.

Cost
The prices of 316L and316L stainless steel are roughly equal.

Magnificent properties
The magnetism of 316 stainless is not very responsive. Most varieties of stainless steel, including 316, are not magnetic like ferromagnetic base stainless steels. They’re either austenitic (or non-magnetic) in nature.

There are some products made of 316 stainless steel that can be cold formed, welded and the crystal structure from austenite transformed into ferromagnetic martensite. A certain amount of magnetism can be achieved with 316L stainless steel.

Practical applications
You can use both types of stainless in different industry sectors. Due to its strength, durability, and resistance to corrosion, 316 is the most popular type of stainless steel. Because it resists welding and chemical corrosive, 316L is highly popular in medical and photographic equipment.
